Rafting Safety Tips

Posted by Vertical Drop on

If you’ve never gone rafting before, then you are seriously missing out on one of the most incredible and thrilling summer activities there is! Rafting offers tons of fun and exciting thrills while putting you in some of the most scenic locations throughout the world. If you are interested in trying rafting this coming summer, there are a few safety tips that you should be aware of ahead of time.

Pick a Licensed Professional

While you may be a professional thrill seeker, this is an activity that you shouldn’t immediately go out and try on your own. Rafting does pose quite a bit of danger, especially if you’re not entirely sure what to be looking for. From the hidden rocks below the surface of the water, to the fearless currents that are always changing, having a trained professional to get you started on your rafting experience is always a good route to choose. If you are a bit more daring, sharing this with them might give them a better idea of how to compose the day so that it isn’t as gentle as other rides might be.

Life Jacket

This safety rule is a tale as old as time. It goes for just about any extreme water sport, and this one is no different. Life jackets are very important to maintaining safety while out on the water, especially in rivers. For the most part, the rivers that you choose to raft in will have some pretty strong currents, at least in certain parts of the river. In the case that the raft flips or you fall out, it’s always nice to know that you have a flotation device that can keep your head above water even with the strong push of the current. Most accidents that ended fatally were due to the lack of a life jacket on the raft.

Pay Attention

Throughout the time that you spend on the boat, your guide will give you plenty of instructions that will help make your trip a safe one. Again, you may have plenty of experience playing around with extreme sports, this is one that you are going to want to get the gist of while they’re informing you.

Aside from paying attention to what your guide is saying, you should also be paying attention to what nature is putting in front of you. From the different courses that the river takes, to any changes in weather that might happen, it’s always good to recognize what types of challenges nature is bringing on.

Regardless of where you wind up rafting this summer, we hope that it is an adventure that you’ll always remember. Make sure to check out all of the incredible equipment that we carry at our outdoor store in Loveland!
